Working on a diamond painting of your own dog, a family photo, or a landscape you photographed yourself is a different experience from a store-bought kit. There's something about placing every drill knowing exactly who or what you're recreating. Diamond Painter generates a professional-grade, DMC-coded pattern from any photo in under a minute — free, in your browser, with no data leaving your device.
Step 1: Choose the right photo
Photo selection has the biggest impact on the final result.
Photos that convert well:
- Pet portraits — distinct fur patterns and clear shapes produce excellent results
- Single-person portraits where the face fills most of the frame
- Silhouettes and high-contrast landscapes
Photos to avoid:
- Large group shots with many small faces
- Very dark images with little shadow detail
- Small subjects against complex busy backgrounds
💡 Resolution matters less than clarity. A good smartphone photo is plenty. Sharp focus and decent lighting matter far more than megapixel count.
Step 2: Basic photo prep (optional but helpful)
- Increase contrast: Color quantization works better with strong tonal separation between areas
- Crop to subject: Remove large empty skies or plain backgrounds so canvas space goes to the important parts
- Simplify backgrounds: Use a free tool like Remove.bg to isolate your subject and place it on a solid or gradient background for cleaner results
Step 3: Generate your pattern

Drag and drop your photo or click to browse. JPG, PNG, and WebP all work. After uploading, configure your canvas size and color count before hitting Generate — the tool waits until you're ready.
Step 4: Choose your canvas size
| Size | Finished dimensions | Approx. drills | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A4 (21×30cm) | Small piece | ~8,000 | First custom project |
| 30×40cm | Wall display | ~14,000 | Beginner recommendation |
| 40×50cm | Feature piece | ~23,000 | Most custom projects |
| 50×70cm | Large display | ~40,000 | Experienced crafters |
For a first custom pattern, 30×40cm keeps total drills under 20,000 — very manageable.
Step 5: Set the color count
| Colors | Character | Use for |
|---|---|---|
| 15–25 | Simple, graphic | Silhouettes, bold landscapes |
| 30–40 | Balanced | Most photos |
| 40–50 | Detailed gradients | Portraits, pets |
| 50+ | Photo-realistic | Rarely worth the complexity |
Generate at 35 colors first, then compare 20 and 50 to find the sweet spot for your image.
Step 6: Refine the pattern (optional)
After generation, editing tools let you adjust by hand:
- Paint tool: Change individual cells to a different palette color
- Fill tool: Replace all connected cells of one color with a click
- Color replacement: Swap one color for another across the entire canvas — useful for merging two similar shades to reduce color count
Step 7: Export and print
Export a high-resolution image and print at 100% scale. If it spans multiple sheets, label each one with its position (A1, A2, B1...) before printing for easy assembly.
Step 8: Order your materials
The DMC color list Diamond Painter generates works with any supplier. DMC codes are standardized — the same number from any brand produces the same color. When ordering, round up slightly on each color's bead count for a small safety margin.
💡 If you want a pre-printed adhesive canvas rather than a paper pattern, custom canvas suppliers can print one for you. Provide your original photo and the DMC color list from Diamond Painter to specify your palette.
FAQ
Does Diamond Painter store my photos?
No. All processing happens locally in your browser. Your photos never leave your device — which matters especially for personal family photos.
The pattern has too many similar-looking colors. What do I do?
Reduce the color count by 5–10 and regenerate. Or use the color replacement tool to manually merge similar colors. If you can't tell two colors apart in the palette preview, they're probably not worth keeping separate.
Your photos are worth more than generic kits. Make something personal.
