The DMC color chart is one of the first things that trips up new stitchers. Hundreds of numbers, subtle shade differences, and colors that look different on screen than they do in hand. When I built the DMC colors page for Stitch Pattern Maker, a lot of user feedback was some version of "I don't know which threads to buy." That's exactly the problem it's meant to solve.

What is the DMC color chart?

DMC is the world's most widely used cross stitch thread brand. Every color has a unique number — you match the number on your pattern to the thread on the shelf.

For example, DMC 321 is Christmas red, DMC 3865 is Winter White, and DMC 310 is black. The numbering system isn't intuitive at first, but the colors you use most often become familiar quickly.

Things to watch out for when choosing colors

Screen vs. real thread

Monitor calibration varies, so the color you see on screen may not perfectly match the actual thread. For important projects, cross-reference with a physical DMC Color Card.

Many near-identical shades exist

DMC has dozens of very similar shades in some color families. White alone includes White, Ecru, B5200, and 3865. Always check which specific number your pattern calls for before purchasing.

Are Anchor threads compatible with DMC patterns?

Not directly. Anchor and DMC use different numbering systems — you'd need a conversion chart to cross-reference. Stitch Pattern Maker currently maps to DMC; Anchor support is planned for a future update.

What if a DMC color is discontinued?

DMC occasionally adds or discontinues colors. The color list on the site is updated periodically to reflect current availability.
